One thing on our bucket list was to visit Colorado during the fall to see the color changes. There were several times we thought this trip would not happen in 2020 because of the virus, wildfires and mandatory state closures.

Colorado was seeing the peak of the fall leaves changing color the three weeks we were in the state.

We visited towns like Victor, Cripple Creek, Guffey, Creede, Lake City and many others. We enjoy seeing the old ghost towns or communities that have long been abandoned.

We tow a Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk which gives us the opportunity to travel most any road under any conditions. Seeking out dirt and unimproved roads is always near the top of our agenda each trip.

Shelf Road

The best sites are off the beaten path and far from the paved roads and cities. We took Phantom Canyon Road up to Victor and Cripple Creek and returned to Canon City by way of Shelf Road. Both are dirt with some great views of the surrounding mountains.

After a few days exploring Canon City we took off to Buena Vista and took up camp at Mt. Pleasant RV Park near town. From here we ventured out in every direction and every dirt road we could find. Our big thing is to always be on the lookout for animals big and small. We did see marmots, a moose, a porcupine, pronghorn, deer and other animals nearby.

Deer near Royal Gorge

We took off this morning for another ghost town called St. Elmo. The town was interesting but the real treat was the chipmunks that would climb all over us and eat sunflower seeds from our hands.

Our hometown of Foley, Alabama took a direct hit from Hurricane Sally so we decided to cut our trip short by a few weeks and return home in a week. South Fork was on the way home so we decided to change our plans and head there for four days.

Aspen Trees near Creede

We took off in the Jeep the next four days to explore the surrounding towns and roads. Creede was a great place to sightsee as there are many roads leading to lakes, streams and lots of colorful aspen trees.

North Clear Creek Falls was on the way to Lake City so we made a quick stop to view the largest fall in Colorado.

After three weeks we headed home to clean up after the hurricane. It was a short trip but a most fascinating one as we got to see the fall colors of our favorite state.
